As part of our monthly Wellbeing Webinar Series, Sequoia partnered with Dr. Jason Chirichigno, Internal Medicine Physician & Clinical Systems Leader at Galileo, to discuss this month’s topic, “Rest & Sleep.”

During the conversation, we discussed how sleep deprivation can negatively impact your wellbeing, common challenges with getting enough rest, tips to improve your down time, and so much more!

You can catch up by viewing the recording.

Here are a few key takeaways from the webinar:

  • Some of the physical and mental benefits of sleep include: improved mood & focus, a stronger immune system, quicker reflexes, and improved health span & overall wellbeing.
  • Those sleeping less than 6 hours are more susceptible to getting sick. While we are sleeping, our brain helps our immune system reset and work correctly.
  • Decreased sleep shows a direct link to Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and heart disease. Sleep helps your heart rate and blood pressure lower, and your body has a chance to do an overall reset.
  • The more sleep we can get, the more we can help increase brain connections and pathways to build strong brain bonds. Sleep deprivation can negatively affect your overall wellbeing by increasing anxiety and depression, negatively affecting your immune system, and reducing overall brain function.
  • It is important to develop a sleep routine. Best practices include going to bed and waking up at the same time, trying to get 8+ hours of sleep, making our bedroom a place of peace, getting early morning sun, and the importance of mental and physical exercises.
